Proxy & VPN Detection Check

This tool analyses your current connection and checks whether it is identified as a proxy, VPN, Tor exit node, or datacenter/hosting IP. Results are based on live geolocation data for your connection.

How Proxy & VPN Detection Works

If you are unsure about the difference between the two technologies, our guides explain what a proxy server is and what a VPN is.

There is no single definitive signal for proxy or VPN detection. We combine multiple methods:

Detection Method How It Works Reliability
ASN Classification IP blocks registered to known VPN providers, datacenters, or proxy services are flagged. High
Tor Exit Node List The Tor Project publishes a list of exit nodes. We match against this list. High
DNSBL / Abuse Lists Proxy and open relay lists maintained by the security community. Medium
Reverse DNS Pattern Hostnames containing "vpn", "proxy", "tor", or datacenter patterns are flagged. Medium
Geolocation Mismatch When the IP's registered location differs significantly from the resolved timezone or language signals. Low–Medium

Frequently Asked Questions

How do websites detect VPNs and proxies?

Mostly by IP reputation. Detection services maintain lists of addresses belonging to datacenters, hosting providers, and known VPN exit servers, identified through ASN data, published provider ranges, and traffic patterns. An address whose ASN is a cloud provider rather than a residential ISP is an instant red flag. Some sites add behavioural checks such as timezone mismatches between the IP location and the browser settings.

Why is my IP flagged as a proxy when I am not using one?

False positives happen. Common causes include carrier-grade NAT (mobile networks funnel thousands of users through shared IPs), a previous holder of your dynamic IP running a proxy or VPN endpoint, corporate or school gateways, and stale reputation data. Reconnecting to get a new dynamic IP usually clears it, or you can contact the reputation provider and request a correction.

What is the difference between a proxy and a VPN?

A proxy relays traffic for specific applications - Usually just the browser - And often without encryption, so your ISP can still read the traffic. A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel at the operating-system level that carries all traffic from every app, hiding both content and destinations from the local network and ISP. Both replace your visible IP address; only the VPN adds real encryption.
